Toshiba Portege R500 Review
Overview
Ultra Portable has entered a niche in the laptop world as the sexy and stylish all laptops on the market. Are small and lightweight, making it the perfect travel companion if you are an advanced user that is constantly in motion. However, as a result of its compact form factor ultra-portable is sometimes limited in its performance and feature sets, making them a more product-oriented business people. These machines usually have lower performance processors, absence of video graphics capabilities, and no integrated optical drive in an effort to save energy and space.
To compensate for these shortcomings, the producers usually dresses up in a housing Light and thin, and the market as a more luxurious product that costs hundreds more than its larger, higher performing stable partners. Each producer in the ultra portable market is to outdo each other, offering a model that is significantly thinner and lighter than the competition.
However, Toshiba is records set out the best in the competition by introducing the much-anticipated Portege R500. Dubbed laptop thinnest and lightest in the world, The R500 can claim a number of other awards including the longest battery life of a widescreen computer 12 'laptop, LED backlit transreflective first indoor outdoor display and other lofty claims. Though this machine is arguably the lightest machine an integrated optical drive, not the first ultra-portable two spindle. Sony TX series featured an ultra portable and lightweight design an integrated optical drive as well. Anyway, 2.4 lbs. is ridiculously light!
Design
The highlight of the R500 is, of course, its diminutive size - Only look! At 0.77 "thick and less than 2.5 lbs. (Toshiba claims 1.7 lbs. Pabas059 battery Toshiba optical drive, and the option to remove solid state disk) is quite impressive how they crammed so much in so little space. Oh, it's pretty good portable, yet practical enough for daily use and comfort. I've had people come to me asking if it really is a laptop that I have and see the look of amazement when I confirm. However, yet I have a hard time convincing myself that I'm holding laptop thinnest and lightest in the world. You really have to have and see for yourself what a wonderful piece of engineering Toshiba has produced.
Toshiba has designed a machine really rare, with the R500. It is the first ultra mobile with classical optical drive built into the unit and occurs in less than an inch thick. Virtually all ultraportables on the market have optional units external optics that require the need to connect via USB and a separate power adapter. In keeping with the times, the Portege comes in a beautiful silver finish on the outside and a contrasting black finish on the inner bezel.
Design-wise, the R500 is elegant and sexy without being exaggerated. Everything is very well established and is clearly evident Toshiba did not waste space to keep things lean and tight. The unit is designed with a mixture of clean rectangular lines and smooth curves - functional and comfortable.
The R500 is incredibly thin, only a hair over 0.75 "thick and about 2.4 pounds. Weight. Toshiba is claiming that the R500 can be ordered with a 64GB drive solid state disk instead of the standard SATA drive mechanics, bringing the weight to an incredible 1.72 lbs! With round edges soft-1BRS Battery Toshiba pa3211u and a strong feeling, Toshiba has done something wonderful to hold and use.
Build quality is top notch with excellent fit and finishing as typical Toshiba laptops usually do. The unit is composed primarily of plastic and tough at the same time, there is some noticeable flex around the area palm rest, due to the fact that thinner materials were used in an effort to save weight. The cap is aluminum and is cold to the touch. I do not expect this Toshiba Tecra 8000 of the battery to control the abuse as much as be careful.
Keyboard
For a small laptop, Toshiba has done an incredible job of cramming a 85-key keyboard in a limited area without changing much of the distribution of keys. There are also dedicated buttons to launch Toshiba Assist, an online utility that comes built into the operating system. Most ultra portable keyboard to use a similar design, although Lenovo ThinkPad Series X uses a seven-row design more ergonomic that technically qualifies as a full-size. Keep in mind these machines in the upper range and two pounds heavy from there, everything is a real exchange.
My only complaint (and welcome surprise) are oddly placed Page Up and Page Down keys to the right of the right Shift key, I have a tendency to hit the accident. Otherwise, I felt very comfortable and natural writing. Those familiar with machines Toshiba has now introduced the keyboard Windows Start button in the location industry standard, and before that Toshiba put this key in the upper right corner. Thanks for fixing that Toshiba! The flex is minimal and is also spill-proof. In general, the R500 has a keyboard very solidly built and comfortable.
Continued Design
The touch screen design is aesthetically pleasing to the eye and works so well as it looks. Feedback is good but a bit uneven at times, but may be due to the sensitivity settings in Vista. Otherwise, there are plenty of Real Estate to move by Toshiba pa3399u battery.
Below is the touchpad mouse buttons presented in a nice metallic-mirror finish. It looks great, but also at the same time, it feels cheaper. And unfortunately, is a magnet for fingerprints and smudges. LED status lights emit through the coating of mirror when is on. Left and right click buttons are where they should be separated by a fingerprint scanner, finger for the safe closure of the R500. The buttons have tactile response is good and do well, but I think too much smaller buttons. On many occasions, I was not registering the click and had to look down away from the screen to see if the bone is where it belongs.
Connectivity Options
More ultra-portable skimp on the port options because of their limited space and added weight. The R500 Toshiba manages to include the ports necessary to help overcome most of which require today's computer tasks. And yes, the built-in optical drive is an added advantage and a first of its kind. Let's look at what this laptop with functions comes complete with:
* 3 USB 2.0 ports
* 4-pin FireWire (IEEE 1394)
* VGA output port
* Headphone / Line Out port
* Mic-in port
PC card slot
* Ethernet Port
* SD Media Card Reader
The ports - there they are! On the right side, find a USB 2.0 port and an Ethernet jack. A standard PC Card slot is on the bottom. Unfortunately, Toshiba has not made use of new ExpressCard standard. Also of note is the WiFi On / Off switch, SD card reader media and optical drive - only 7 mm thin!
On the left you will find a VGA port for connecting to an external monitor or projector, a 4-pin mini-plug 'Firewire port, and 2 more USB ports. Volume control, audio in / out and power port are also on this side.
Heat and Noise
The R500 is a relatively quiet machine. The Toshiba Battery pabas012 fan is audible but quiet in operation, although it is constantly blowing hot air left by the vents.
Speaking of heat, however, the R500 can run really hot. This is due to how thin is the unity of nature and materials light used. That means the palm rest and keyboard gets hot fast, and you really feel at the bottom left, where the RAM slot. I almost burn me holding the laptop on the near side vents. If you plan on using this machine in your lap, do not write too time in this position, you will find it uncomfortable after a while. It is best placed on a desktop for use.
Update and Expansion
Not surprisingly, the expansion capacity ultra-portable size sacrifice. That said, the R500 really only have two options for expansion: upgrade to a higher capacity battery and upgrading the RAM. For the RAM, only one slot available for adding more. That's pretty much it.
Features
The Toshiba Satellite Pro Battery 435cdt we receive is more or less in a configuration. It features dual-processor Intel Core, Core 2 Duo U7600. The U7600 is an ultra low voltage processor that is designed to maximize energy savings and runs at 1.20GHz and 2MB reasonable L2 cache features. 1 GB SDRAM memory Dual Channel DDR2 PC2-533 comes standard and is expandable to 2 GB max. A 64MB Intel GMA950 graphics chip is included, but do not expect the power of the parties.
Our R500 was equipped with a standard 2.5 "120GB 5400RPM SATA hard drive. Appear hard disk performance be good, and operated with little or no noise. We are pleased to see Toshiba use industry standard 2.5 "hard drives, Toshiba pa2497 battery compared with smaller, slower and smaller capacity 1.8 "drives that some companies use to save space and weight. Toshiba uses a damper design to reduce the impact and an accelerometer to detect sudden falls and help protect the hard disk. Really to lighten the load, the R500 can be ordered with a solid state drive with a meager 64 GB of space. SSD drives are still relatively expensive, but are lighter, consume less energy, produce no noise, and may be faster than their mechanical counterparts. As the industry matures, we will see a greater capacity of SSD drives for less.
To round the package, our review unit includes a fingerprint scanner identity Toshiba Satellite NB200 series battery built-in microphone, and a basic sound card. Pathetically, there is only one of the speakers and, with it, you not be a good audition for him. The LCD panel and chassis both have shock protection to protect from drops of light, but do not expect anything with something so strong small.
Unfortunately, Toshiba decided not to include a built-in modem to reduce costs and save space. If you're traveling a lot and you are staying in one place offered only to landlines, which have to invest in an aftermarket USB modem, or pray there is no wireless signal around.
Show
The 12.1 "widescreen WXGA the R500 is surprising in view. It is so incredibly thinhow Toshiba managed to put a screen cap space is so thin beyond imagination. However, the screen is resistant to bending and minimal ripple when pressure is applied. The screen can reach resolutions up to 1280 x 800.
The R500 uses LED backlighting rather than the traditional LCD setup. An LED-backlit display is capable produce a more even light throughout the screen so that the colors and images are consistently brilliant. LED backlighting can also be equal or brighter than traditional LCD screens, even with much less energy to help improve the life of the battery Toshiba pa3421u-1BRS.
In testing real world, I found the widescreen very crisp and vibrant. I did not notice any huge difference with an LED backlight settings, but the brightness color, even slept the whole screen, if you face directly to the screen and not an angle. Watching a video produced no problems with any apparent confusion. Text went well and clearly legible.
Toshiba claims is the first 12.1 "indoor / outdoor backlit transreflective LED. In situations outdoor LED backlighting can be disabled with the touch of a button and let the transreflective screen uses natural light to produce the image screen. This not only saves battery power, but allows you to work outside in sunlight, if found suitable. However, wide limited, as the sunlight should be pointed directly at the screen to produce an image and usually emit a dimmed results, look polarized. However, this Toshiba Satellite M30 Series battery technology certainly makes things readable in outdoor situations. The question is whether you really want to sit outside in the heat with his back facing the sun.
Optical Drive
The R500 has a standard built-in optical drive. This may not be a surprise for many, but this is great news in the market for ultra-portable, as it marks the first time that a system of this class. The 8X single layer DVD Drive + /-R optical measuring only a small 7-mm thick, making it thinner enclosure of all!
Even better is extremely low operating the unit. Never again a mild buzz that unit outputs. The optical unit as its called, supports nine formats listed here:
Maximum speed supported formats:
* CD-ROM (24x)
* CD-R (24x)
* CD-RW (10x)
* DVD-ROM drive (8x)
* DVD-R (8x)
* DVD (8x)
* DVD + R (8x)
* DVD + RW (4x)
* DVD-RAM (3x)
Wi-Fi
The R500 uses Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN, Toshiba pa3399u-2brs support industry standard battery 802.11a/b/g/n wireless signals. The wireless connectivity worked well, smoothly and connectivity was fast. A convenient on / off switch lets you turn off the wireless signal when not in use, saving battery power.
People waiting to use the Internet via landlines care - Toshiba omitted the inclusion of a modem in an effort to save space. So unless you are connected on the wireless anywhere, you must pay some money on a portable USB drive.
Bluetooth
Bluetooth 2.0 is included with the laptop and also features EDR (Enhanced Data Rate) support for stereo headsets and other devices.
Battery
The standard 5800mAh battery (6-Cell) and Lithium Ion Battery Toshiba Satellite L355 Series Toshiba battery claims it's the world's longest battery results on a widescreen 12.1 "notebook. The battery attaches to the rear. The design is free of any outgoing edge is flush with the rest of the rear surface. Upon his return, I got a good four hours with the laptop for web browsing and other basic tasks. In general, I would expect the R500 to get the battery life very good. You can see the full benchmark results later in the review.
AC Adapter
The Toshiba R500 comes with a compact power supply is not greater than the moving average in size. It's rated to 15V x 3A.
Method Installation
The laptop was set to operate at full capacity through the establishment of the energy mix in 'balanced' with the AC connected, which means that the CPU will not underclock during test execution. To test battery performance, the power scheme is set to "Power Saver". Each performance test battery was repeated three times to ensure accuracy. Before each test was executed laptop restarts and defragment the hard disk.
